Version 2.1 of ResEdit is a fully-tested, non-beta release which supersedes the v1.2 release and interim beta releases (notably v2.0b2). If you've obtained the ResEdit software without documentation, be aware that the ResEdit Reference book will be available in February 1991 from the Apple Programmers and Developers Association.

We think you'll enjoy this release of ResEdit. The user interface is much better than it was in version 1.2, and numerous editors have been added or improved.
Important notes about version 2.1:
• If you use the DiskDoubler 3.0 INIT, you may experience problems using ResEdit. The problems occur if you have an application open with ResEdit that contains resources with the same resource IDs as resources in ResEdit itself. This problem will be fixed in DiskDoubler 3.0.2.
• Because of the wide variety of changes made for System software version 7.0, it can be dangerous to open the System 7 System file while running System 6. If you need to open the System 7 System file, make any necessary changes and immediately close and save the file. There are known problems in the following cases:
√ Printing and Page Setup bomb because they try to use information from the System 7 System file instead of the active system.
√ Any standard file dialog will bomb if you are using Boomerang or Super Boomerang.
Problems with other INITs may occur, so be careful and keep a backup.
Editing the System 7 System file while System 7 itself is running shouldn’t cause any problems.

For those of you interested in the details, here’s a more complete list of the major differences between version 1.2 and version 2.1.
Changes between 2.0 and 2.1:
• New implementations of the 'DLOG', 'WIND', and 'ALRT' editors are included.
• A new 'DITL' editor is included that allows multiple items to be selected and aligned.
• The last modified date is no longer changed if you close a file that wasn't changed or don't save the changes.
• If a file being opened contains a 'ckid' (MPW project) resource that indicates that the file was checked out read only, an alert is displayed.
• Autosizing of dialogs, alerts, and windows is now supported under System 7.0.
• System 7 compressed resources can be opened and edited (but not recompressed).
• You can now copy and paste in the 'PICT' editor.
• There are new 'pltt' and 'clut' editors that allow up to 256 colors to be edited.
• A new 'TEXT' and 'styl' editor is included that allows text with a variety of fonts, sizes, and styles to be edited.
• A new 'vers' editor allows 'vers' resources to be created using pop-up menus and edit text fields.
• All of the fatbits editors (except the 'FONT' editor) now have a new, consistent, user interface.
• New 'ppat' (color pattern), 'ppt#' (color pattern list), and 'crsr' (color cursor) editors round out the color resource editing capabilities.
• The 'ppt#' editor can be used to edit color desktop patterns in the System file.
• You can drag items in the 'ppt#', 'SICN' and 'pat#' editor lists to reorder the lists.
• The 'ppat' and 'ppt#' editors support relative patterns.
• In all of the fatbits editors, the color and pattern palettes can be torn off.
• The color pixel editors are fully compatible with System 7.0 and the 8•24 GC card with graphics acceleration on.
• Several templates were added including 'fval', 'resf', 'hwin', 'sect', and 'ppcc'. Several templates were also added for ResEdit resource types.
Plus zillions of bug fixes and small feature changes.
Changes between 1.2 and 2.0
• 'MENU', 'BNDL', 'cicn', and Finder icon family editors were added.
• The user interface was changed to use the standard file directory dialog.
• Zoom boxes were added to picker windows.
• A Select Changed command was added to the Edit menu.
• Typing either the ID or the resource name now selects a resource in the resource picker.
• Revert now reverts changes that have been made in a resource’s info (ID, name & bits)
• The file info window now contains new bits for System 7. The locked bit was changed to an Alias bit and isLetter, isStationary and useCustomIcon were added. All four of these bits only show up if system 7.0 or later is running.
• The folder info window now has bits for System 7. The locked bit is gone and, if System 7 is running, a useCustomIcon bit is added.
• The 'snd ' picker now allows any sound to be played.
• The resource map of a file can now be verified and repaired. The verification includes most of the checks that the MPW tool RezDet performs. There is a checkbox in the preferences dialog to enable full file verification on open. The default if to not verify the file automatically.
• A Font menu was added to the template editor. Also, shift-tab now moves backwards through a template.
• An Open Special submenu was added to the File menu.
• View menus were added to pickers.
• Large 'PICT's can be pasted into all bit editors - you can slide the part you want into the editable area.
• You can now revert the active System file and ResEdit!
• 'qrsc', 'wstr', and 'fld#' templates were added.
• Most editors and pickers can now print the contents of their windows.
